Title: "Unc" - 2008 Size: 36" x 51.5" Medium: poplar wood, oils, metal signage * SOLD
"Years ago, a friend gave me a wonderful old (heavy!) metal sign bearing the infamous James Montgomery Flagg military recruitment image. -- Well, I wanted to build a custom frame for it and decided upon a bit of irony... to juxtapose a pacifist message to that pro-military message.
*The latin @ bottom reads "Semper Arma, Semper Dolor" = ("If you always resort to arms, you will always suffer"). "
*My thanks to my Marine friend John Hackett, who aided me with this piece by shooting holes in that upper "winged" area with his 44 revolver.
"War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good.
We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other's children" - Jimmy Carter
