"Carrousel" - 2022 52' X 32" wood, pine needles, modeling paste, oils
Those wanting a clear description of “Carrousel” will be disappointed in me I suppose.
My analysis would be no more correct than theirs.
I think Carrousel is a bit of a provocateur, and in its enigma is the source of its strength.
There are events in my personal life, and internal polemics, which I can identify as part of the tap root of Carrousel, but I hope the work goes beyond my own idiosyncrasies and finds something more collective… for that’s the vertebrae of enduring art.
I recall as a young artist in my 20’s, being inspired by this quote from painter Edward Hopper:
“So much of every art is an expression of the subconscious that it seems to me most of all the important qualities are put there unconsciously, and little of importance by the conscious intellect. But these are things for the psychologist to untangle.”
