Bunker - 2020 48” x 36” Wood, Shagbark Hickory bark, oils, metal SOLD
“Bunker” began as an improvisational drawing in my sketchbook… with no particular deliberate content - however, the sketch continued to pull at me, which is usually my cue that it’s worthy of proceeding into a more developed work.
I suppose “Bunker” clarified its meaning for me as I worked. Some inferences seemed obvious from the start, such as the sheep as a metaphor for “following”, or an idle intelligence… and likewise associations of innocence and vulnerability are in the mix.
I see Bunker as a cultural portrait, a portrayal of our tendency to burrow in and become corralled by our conclusions… locked in by what we have locked down. Comfortable in our querencia of certitude.
