"Gilligan" - 2021 39”wide, 50” tall wood, collage, metal, found objects, oils * SOLD
Like many of my works, this one emerged as a bit of random doodling within a sketchbook, and took on more metaphorical meanings for me as it proceeded.
The lone figure is bobbing between two bisected worlds: the bygone realm underfoot, physically littered and worn, …the other realm ethereal, unmarred, and forthcoming.
The lone figure is fishing… a metaphor itself for a pursuit, a yearning, hoping for a meaningful catch.
The title Gilligan has some familiar cultural connection to “an island”, but I was more so attracted to the Celtic meaning “small boy”, and especially, the Urban Dictionary’s definition of the word gilligan: “A person that lacks any skill or knowledge in regards to boating”.
There is good reason for humankind to be consistently thoughtful and humble…
as we’re forever adrift ‘tween the concrete past, and the intangible unfolding future.
