"Charlie's Pride" - 2023 36.5" x 25" wood, modeling paste, metal, oils
Similar to other works on this website, “Charlie’s Pride” began from an old (20 year) sketch that depicted an old oak tree, littered with its “catch”…
a squadron of kites that never completed their flight, but were quickly lost within a tangle of string and limbs - good fun suddenly ended, hopes dashed.
As I began re-sketching for this “kite” theme, I explored various compositional variants, with a yearn to show a lone person juxtaposed to the kite eating tree. Incorporating a figure soon popped an old recollection from my youth, the Charles Schulz’ cartoon Peanuts, and the beloved character Charlie Brown.
Charlie was the undaunted ne’er-do-well who time after time just could not get his kite to sail (no thanks to Lucy). --
I decided after all these years, perseverance would prevail... Charlie would find his pride. :)
